Inferior was published in 2017 by 4th Estate in the UK and Commonwealth, and Beacon Press in the US and Canada. It soon hit number 2 in the Foyles bestseller chart, and was a Christmas pick in Waterstones and Blackwell's bookshops. It was named a top summer read by The Independent and TED Talks, and a year-end book choice by The Spectator, New Zealand's Listener, The Guardian, Science News, BBC Focus, and Chemistry World. It also won the  Physics World Book of the Year and was runner-up in the science category in the 2017 Goodreads Choice AwardsInferior was made possible by a generous award from the Society of Authors' K Blundell Trust.

In summer 2018 a group of scientists launched crowdfunding campaigns to get copies into state schools in the UK, New York, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. As a result, in 2019 special editions of Inferior are now available in every state school library in the UK with a foreword by physicist Jess Wade , who launched the campaign, and will soon be available in every state school in New Zealand. Fans of the book have also produced their own t-shirts, pins, badges and hoodies. 


Inferior has featured on BBC Radio 4, BBC Newsnight, The Brian Lehrer Show on NPR, and received rave reviews in theFinancial Times, Economist, Guardian, Observer, The Independent, Daily Mail, New Statesman and many more. Science writer Aarathi Prasad described it as  "an important book, beautifully written, and with compelling narratives and hard evidence." Eileen Pollack, author of The Only Woman in the Room , called it  "smart, balanced, and wonderfully readable book."
